Where to go

Mountains and beaches, an hour apart

El Salvador is small enough to have breakfast on a volcano and be in the Pacific by lunch. Here is what is worth the drive.

Mountains & volcanoes

8 places

A volcanic spine runs the length of the country. Crater lakes, cloud forest and coffee slopes — most of it under two hours from San Salvador, and noticeably cooler than the coast.

  • Volcán de Santa Ana

    Santa Ana

The country's highest volcano at 2,381 m, with a turquoise crater lake at the top. Guided hikes leave from Cerro Verde.

  • Cerro Verde

    Santa Ana

Cloud forest at 2,030 m with hummingbirds, wild orchids and a mirador facing Izalco.

  • Volcán de Izalco

    Sonsonate

A bare black cone that erupted almost continuously from 1770 to 1958 — sailors used it to navigate.

  • Lago de Coatepeque

    Santa Ana

A collapsed caldera filled with water that occasionally turns an implausible turquoise.

  • Laguna de Alegría

    Usulután

A sulphurous green crater lake above one of the coldest towns in the country.

  • Ruta de Las Flores

    Sonsonate & Ahuachapán

Juayúa, Apaneca and Concepción de Ataco along one winding road — coffee farms and weekend food festivals.

  • Suchitoto

    Cuscatlán

Cobbled colonial streets above Lago Suchitlán, with migratory birds on the water in the dry season.

  • Cordillera del Bálsamo

    La Libertad

The ridge between San Salvador and the sea. Spring-like weather and the reason Santa Tecla stays cool.

Beaches & the Pacific

8 places

Just over 300 km of Pacific coast, and consistent surf for most of the year. The La Libertad stretch is the busy one; go west or east and the beaches empty out fast.

  • Playa El Tunco

    La Libertad

The social centre of Surf City — hostels, bars and a river-mouth break. Busiest at weekends.

  • Playa El Sunzal

    La Libertad

A long, forgiving right-hander. The usual place to take a first surf lesson.

  • Playa El Zonte

    La Libertad

Quieter than El Tunco and the original Bitcoin Beach, where the currency experiment started.

  • Punta Roca

    La Libertad

A world-class right point break off La Libertad town. Experienced surfers only — it breaks over rock.

  • Playa Taquillo

    La Libertad

Small coves below the cliffs west of the port, several of them effectively private.

  • Barra de Santiago

    Ahuachapán

A sandbar between the Pacific and a protected mangrove estuary. Sea turtles nest here.

  • Costa del Sol

    La Paz

A long flat strip of beach houses with the Estero de Jaltepeque behind it.

  • Playa El Espino

    Usulután

Wide, undeveloped eastern sand. Far fewer visitors, and a proper drive to reach.
