Cerro Verde: cloud forest between three volcanoes

Cerro Verde is a dormant volcano whose crater filled in long enough ago to grow a forest on top. At 2,030 m the air is genuinely cold — bring a layer, however hot San Salvador was when you left.

The loop trail

The Sendero Cerro Verde is a well-maintained 45-minute loop from the car park through dense cloud forest: moss, bromeliads, wild orchids, and hummingbirds that hold still just long enough to disappoint your camera. It is flat enough for most fitness levels and it does not require a guide.

The mirador partway round is the payoff. Izalco sits directly opposite — a bare black cone with no vegetation on it at all — and on a clear morning Lago de Coatepeque is laid out below to the east. Three volcanoes and a caldera lake from one platform.

The Santa Ana summit

Most people come for this rather than the loop. Santa Ana — locally Ilamatepec — is the country's highest volcano at 2,381 m, and its crater holds a sulphurous turquoise lake that genuinely does not look real.

The hike leaves from Cerro Verde as a guided group escorted by the tourist police, typically departing late morning. That is not a formality you can opt out of; the group goes when it goes. Budget around four hours return. The trail is exposed and loose near the top and there is no shade — sun protection matters more than you think at that altitude.

Getting the timing right

Cloud builds from midday almost every day of the year. A 7am start from San Salvador puts you on the mirador while the view still exists. Arrive at 2pm and there is a reasonable chance you will see white in every direction.

What to bring

Closed shoes with grip, a warm layer, sun protection, and more water than feels necessary. There are basic comedores at the car park but nothing on the trail.
