El Sunzal: the point break that put Surf City on the Olympic circuit

El Sunzal does not look like an Olympic qualifying venue. It looks like a beach in La Libertad — a long cobblestone point, a line of comedores above the sand, board racks outside every second building. That is exactly why it works as one: the wave is good enough to be taken seriously by people who surf for a living, and unpretentious enough that nobody has built a stadium around it.

A record field, twice over

From 5 to 14 September 2025, El Sunzal and the punchier river-mouth peak at nearby La Bocana hosted the 2025 ISA World Surfing Games — the third time the event has come to Surf City El Salvador, after 2021 and 2023. It was the largest field the competition has ever drawn: 297 surfers from 61 countries, all chasing ranking points on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The women's shortboard rounds were sailed at El Sunzal's long right-hander; the men surfed the shorter, harder-breaking peak at La Bocana down the coast.

Twenty-two Olympians were in the draw, among them Kauli Vaast, gold medallist at Paris 2024, and Sally Fitzgibbons, the reigning World Surfing Games champion. That is an unusually stacked field for a beach where, on an ordinary Tuesday, the lineup is mostly instructors and their first-time students.

Who won

Australia took the team title, on the back of Dane Henry's gold in the men's division and enough depth across the rest of the squad — Morgan Cibilic, Callum Robson, Milla Brown, Sally Fitzgibbons and Ellie Harrison — to hold the overall points lead through the finals. Janire González Etxabarri of Spain won the women's individual gold. France, Peru and Portugal each medalled too.

The hometown wave

The story that mattered most on the beach itself wasn't a medal. Bryan Perez, El Salvador's own Olympic surfer, competed on home sand in front of a crowd that does not get many chances to watch one of its own on the biggest stage the sport has. Surf City's entire premise — turning a stretch of coast Salvadorans already surfed into somewhere the world comes to watch them do it — was, for those ten days, not a marketing line. It was just what was happening on the point.

Surfing it on a normal day

Most of the year, El Sunzal is a straightforward, rewarding right point break with something for more than one level: an inside section that's forgiving enough to learn on, and an outside peak with real push for anyone ready to leave the whitewater behind. It sits close enough to El Tunco — a five-minute walk along the beach — that most visitors base themselves there and surf both.

Board rental and lessons are available at every second storefront along the point; agree the rate before you paddle out, since nothing is posted. Mornings are calmer and less crowded than the afternoon, when the wind tends to pick up.

What's next

The partnership between the ISA and Surf City El Salvador now runs through 2027. The World Junior Surfing Championship returns in September 2026 — its third edition here — and the World Longboard Championship in October 2026, its fourth consecutive year in Surf City. Neither is the World Surfing Games itself — that moves to Peru for 2026 — but both are free to watch from the sand, and both are a good reason to time a trip around something more than the swell forecast.
